From Lieutenant Governor Scott Angelle: Thursday, July 22, 2010 An estimated 15,000 people packed the Lafayette Cajundome yesterday, calling on the Obama Administration to lift the federal moratorium on deepwater drilling. I was honored to serve as Master of Ceremonies of the event, which brought together Louisiana residents of all walks of life who fear that the moratorium will destroy tens of thousands of jobs in this state and devastate our local, regional and national economy. As I mentioned yesterday, Louisiana has a long and distinguished history of fueling America and we proudly do what few states are willing to do. Each and every day in this great 18th state of our union, we put on our hard hats and our steel toe boots; we kiss our families goodbye; and we begin the tough work of exploring, producing, processing, storing, refining and transporting the fuel to energize the United States of America. And while we too support the use of renewable energy, we know that America is not yet ready to get all of its fuel from the birds and bees and flowers and the trees. It was chilling to hear the loud cries of "Get us Back to Work" and "Lift the Moratorium," in the packed Cajundome, and the energy in the building in the Hub City of Louisiana's oil and gas industry was unlike anything I have experienced before. Never have so many people, so many friends, and so many American workers, gathered in one location to support one effort and one goal. A video of the Rally can be viewed here The Gulf Economic Survival Team needs your help to keep this momentum going! We must continue to call for expedited implementation of safety enhancements in the Gulf and a swift end to the moratorium to get our people back to work in weeks, not months! Continue to remind friends, family and business associates around the globe about the online petition on our website: www.GEST.la.gov. As a result of yesterday's rally, we are now at more than 172,000 signatures. Continue to send us your letters supporting an end to the moratorium or descriptions of how the moratorium is affecting your business and family. E-mail to gest@crt.state.la.us. Thank you for your support of the Gulf Economic Survival Team and our efforts to Save American Jobs. Together, we will make our voices heard to lift the moratorium and get our brothers and sisters on Louisiana's Gulf Coast back to work finding and producing the energy that fuels our nation.
Scott A. Angelle
About the Gulf Economic Survival Team: Chambers of Commerce, business organizations and local elected officials in coastal Louisiana are banding together to urge President Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to modify the six-month offshore drilling moratorium in an effort to save over 20,000 jobs in the region. The Gulf Economic Survival Team (GEST) has been formed under the leadership of Louisiana Lieutenant Governor Scott Angelle at the request of Governor Bobby Jindal. The team’s message is simple: The Administration's May 28 order, suspending all existing offshore drilling in depths greater than 500 feet for a minimum of six months, will cause irreparable harm to Louisiana’s energy service industry and drive a stake through the heart of coastal communities already suffering tremendously from the environmental and economic impacts of the BP oil spill. Through letters, resolutions and personal appeals, GEST is requesting that the President and Secretary Salazar reduce the moratorium to no more than 30 days, during which time thorough rig safety inspections can be conducted by federal inspectors, greatly reducing job losses and negative economic impact on our region while ensuring a safer industry. For more information or to get involved in our effort to preserve the economic stability of the Gulf Coast, and thousands of jobs in our region, e-mail us at gest@crt.state.la.us.
