Historic Building Recovery Grant Program
The Historic Building Recovery Grant Program operates out of offices in the Old U.S. Mint building in New Orleans as part of the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation. It provides monetary grants and oversight of repairs to historic buildings that suffered damage in hurricanes Rita and Katrina in 2005. The Program is funded by a grant from the U.S. National Park Service, authorized by Congress. Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu, Dick Moe of the National Trust, and representatives of the Preservation Resource Center in New Orleans lobbied Congress for the federal funding, which was received in late 2006, with a second appropriation received in 2007. The Program is currently funded through the end of 2009. A total of almost $19.3 million has been allocated to the program, and as of early January, 2009, almost $16 million had been paid out to owners of 565 historic buildings in Louisiana. Presently, however, no additional funds have been authorized, and so no new grant applications can be advertised. With the allocated federal funds and the program staff’s expertise and dedication, the Historic Building Recovery Grant Program has provided a boost to the area’s recovery efforts, and is the only hurricane recovery program that specifically targets historic buildings.
