Name: Derek R. Brown
City: New Orleans, LA
Comments: I own and operate GRD Demolition, a company that specializes in deconstruction, or hand demolition. The purpose of deconstruction is to salvage as much material as possible from buildings that need to be demolished. It is an ideal technique for most historically significant structures. The amount of lumber, brick, doors, windows, trim, architectural pieces, metals, and various other materials that can be salvaged greatly offsets the actual cost of the demolition and it keeps these historic items in circulation.

Other benefits to deconstruction are: job creation for the local citizenry, promotion of environmentally friendly practices, more humane way to tear down a property (easier for the homeowners to bear with), and good PR.
