Hi I am a student of Tulane University School of Architecture, and I am completely appalled that the thought of these mid-century schools are even being considered to be torn down. The movement behind green/sustainable architecture is so prevalent today, yet why are we not preserving our buildings of new Orleans, especially schools? Renovating and restoring is completely sustainable. Please strongly reconsider tearing down these schools: Charles Colbert's Phyllis Wheatley Elementary and Curtis and Davis' Thomy Lafon Elementary. What is very bothersome is that let's say that a new school will be built in place of the current schools, I bet anything they will not last as long, or have as much detail and character as these schools that are standing have. In today's world, unfortunately cookie cutter architecture has become a way of the future. Please strongly reconsider demolishing school history and a part of New Olreans architecture that is still standing. |
