Name: Ann Sayas
City: New Orleans
Specific
property
affected:
Booker T. Washington School at 1201 S. Roman St.
Comments: The flooding from the failed federal levies destroyed and damaged many historic buildings in our city. Since we are a city which values our heritage, preserving what can be restored will hold the memories of our elders and provide a symbol for our young people to honor past achievements. The auditorium should be fully restored as a meeting place for students and for the community. The name of the school should be retained. If the classrooms must be demolished and rebuilt, efforts should be made to honor the original purpose of vocational education. Efforts should be made to honor the significance of Booker T. Washington, the significance of the school's founding in the history of New Orleans schools, the significance of the students who attended the school and the significance of the performers who shared their talents in the auditorium.
