I understand that the cottage has historical significance in the New Orleans area, however, it is not suitable for the education of children. Audubon Charter school is an EXCELLENT school, rated A+ on the state grading scale for students. The school has been in the neighborhood much longer than some of the neighbors that are commenting about the school. Students in the City of New Orleans deserve a state of the art facility.
The School Board Representatives reviewed the plans at five community meetings that were widely advertised. They also pointed out that while the cottage would be demolished, they would ensure that trees are preserved, and new trees would be planted on Pine Street. They also informed the community that other steps were being taken to preserve the building (e.g. not making changes to the front of the building, keeping the wood floors in the building and the original stairwells, etc.). The traffic issues are minor - four about 15 minutes a day, two times a day there is traffic, just as with any other school. The neighbors don't want the school there period. Their objections to the cottage are just a way to stop the renovation because they don't want a PUBLIC school in their neighborhood. |
