I cannot overstate the importance of preserving this historic structure and urge that it be repurposed as a safe place in which the conversation of justice reinvestment and community crisis intervention can occur. The House of Detention can continue to serve as a reminder of the social contract this nation was founded upon. It would be the perfect place for continued dialogue from diverse perspectives of all affected by and interested in public safety and corrections.
As a member of the Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum Board I've seen first hand the good that open communication from all who visit the inspirational, historic setting can do to promote awareness of present issues through visiting our past attempts to correct deviant behavior. Creative solutions and support for forward, positive movement on matters associated with crime, punishment, and re-integration can be born when people continue to share their experiences. The House of Detention is more than an old building. HOD has a story to tell and a lesson to teach if it remains among us. |
