2/17/2018 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Native Guard Battlefield Tour, 10 a.m. To commemorate Black History Month, the site will offer a guided tour to the Louisiana Native Guard battlefield, where the First and Third Louisiana Native Guard regiments fought a historic battle on May 27, 1863. The tour will begin in the Visitor Center´s audio/visual room. Wear appropriate clothing/footwear for walking and bring water and insect repellent. 3/24/2018 to 3/25/2018 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - The Siege of Port Hudson Reenactment, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., each day. Visitors will have access to volunteer re-enactors in Union and Confederate campsites performing typical activities of the assaults. Soldiers dressed in authentic reproduction uniforms will be on hand to answer questions pertaining to the siege during the summer of 1863. The three branches of the services – artillery, cavalry and infantry will be portrayed as well as cooks, laundresses and sutlers. 4/14/2018 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Brought to Light: "The Horse Soldiers", 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Using Hollywood movie footage and actual photographs, this indoor discussion will follow the timeline and events of Union Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson´s April and May 1863 historic cavalry raids. Starting in Tennessee and ending in Baton Rouge, the raid covered over 600 miles of raiding, riding, fighting, and avoiding capture by thousands of Confederates – ending sixteen days later in triumph and a hero´s welcome. 4/27/2018 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Living History School Day, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Participants will explore, see, and hear examples of the daily life of a Civil War soldier. Students will view multiple stations such as artillery, infantry, food, women at war, medicine, etc. Reservations are required; call or email to make your group´s reservation.
