2/16/2019 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Native Guard Battlefield Tour, 10 a.m. In honor of Black History Month, join a park ranger on a guided hike of the Telegraph Road area where the African-American troops of the 1st and 3rd Louisiana Native Guards fought on May 27, 1863. Participants are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear, bring drinking water, appropriate clothing and insect repellent. This hike is across rough, uneven, brushy, and sometimes muddy ground. 3/3/2019 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Firepower!, 1 p.m. The Port Hudson State Historic Site will conduct demonstrations of Civil War era original and reproduction weapons. The program will start with a cannon demonstration followed by small arms; muskets, rifles, carbines, and pistols. 3/15/2019 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Ghost Ships on the Mississippi, 6:30 p.m. Experience the Anniversary of Battle of Port Hudson by a ranger-led evening walk to Fort Desperate and tell of bizarre and ghostly battlefield stories. After the walk, the staff will conduct a special night-time firing of the always popular 42-pounder cannon, then we move to the pond where the night-time deadly navy assault will be recreated and the destruction of the USS Mississippi will be witnessed using the model gunboat fleet. 3/30/2019 to 3/31/2019 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Siege of Port Hudson Reenactment, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The annual reenactment will mark the 156th anniversary of "The Siege of Port Hudson." Visitors will have access to reenactors from both the Union and Confederate armies. Campsites will be open to the public. 4/6/2019 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Civil War Trust Park Day, 9:30 a.m. - Noon Park Day is an excellent opportunity to bring history enthusiasts together to help keep our nationīs heritage preserved and pristine. Great opportunity for volunteers to help with work around the park. A T-shirt will be provided to volunteers through the Civil War Trust. 4/7/2019 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Devilīs Elbow Tour, 9:45 a.m. - Noon As part of the Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table Symposium, a Port Hudson SHS ranger will conduct a tour of "The Devilīs Elbow." This portion of the battlefield is privately owned by the Georgia-Pacific Paper Mill. The tour will leave the Port Hudson Visitor Center at 9:45 AM and travel by caravan to the Devilīs Elbow. Devilīs Elbow was defended in 1863 by Booneīs Louisiana Battery and Mileīs Louisiana Legion. Level of difficulty is easy to moderate.
