Julice
is a platform mound not far from a channel that feeds into the
Mississippi River. A 1954 survey described it as 8 feet tall with
a small platform on the summit, and noted that it had been impacted
by Hwy. 581. Current measurements show the mound is about 9 feet
tall and 130 by 65 feet at its base. It appears that about a third
of the mound remains. East of the marker is a historic cemetery,
and the headstone of Julice Johnson is on the southwest corner
of the mound. More historic graves are clustered about 120 feet
east of the mound. A few ceramics found at the mound date occupation
to AD 1200–1541 (Mississippi period). Because the mound
is less than a mile from Transylvania Mounds, it’s possible
that Julice is part of that complex.
