Guidelines for Management Summaries


  • When time constraints compel a quicker completion of the Section 106 review process, the Louisiana Division of Archaeology may accept a management summary for review. Management summaries hasten the review process by postponing the detailed analysis and interpretation elements of the archaeological report. Management summaries may be submitted to the Division upon the completion of fieldwork, but only after prior consultation with the Division.
  • Management Summaries are not substitutes for draft or final reports. The review and concurrence of the Division with the management summary determinations does not absolve the contractor or agency from submission of draft or final reports. Investigators should consider comments made by Division personnel on management summaries in the draft versions of the reports. The draft reports of projects for which management summaries were submitted must be provided to the Division in a timely manner.
  • Any archaeological sites considered in a Management Summary submitted to the Division must have site numbers assigned by the Division. Management summaries that present information on sites without site numbers will not be reviewed. Please see our Site Form pages for more information.
  • Investigators must submit two bound copies of each management summary to the Division.
  • The Division will not accept Management Summaries in a letter format.


At a minimum, Management Summaries should consist of:

Front Matter

  • Cover - Include the title of the management summary (including the phrase “Phase I, Phase II, Reconnaissance or Monitoring” as appropriate), the lead federal or state agency involved, as well as any other client, the contractor performing the work, the words "management summary”, and the date (month and year) of the summary.
  • Title page - Include the title of the management summary (including the phrase “Phase I, Phase II, Reconnaissance or Monitoring” as appropriate), the author(s), the date written (month and year), the contracting firm and the lead federal or state agency along with their addresses, and phone numbers, and the agency contract/permit number, where applicable.
  • Abstract - One page maximum. Include a brief summary of the project and project area, its size (acres/hectares), and the parish or parishes where the work was done. Summarize the results and the National Register eligibility recommendation for each site investigated. Succinctly state any recommendations for additional work.
  • Table of Contents - Headings should duplicate verbatim those found in the text. The Table of Contents should use leader tabs (e.g.…) between the heading and page number. All appendix materials should be listed in the Table of Contents.
  • List of Figures - Duplicate verbatim the first sentence of captions for each figure in the text. The List of Figures should use leader tabs between the figure caption and page number.
  • List of Tables - Duplicate verbatim the title of each table in the text. The List of Table should use leader tabs between the table title and page number.
  • Preface or Acknowledgments - Include the names of the Principal Investigator and other archaeological personnel, and the funding and/or sponsoring agency. If the contracted firm is listed as the author, describe here the individual authors and their relative contributions.
  • Pagination - The pagination for the front matter must be in lower case Roman numerals.


Management Summary Contents


  • Pagination - The pages for all management summaries must be consecutively numbered in Arabic numerals.
  • Introduction - Outline the scope of work, including a project description, the area of potential effect (APE), project history, agencies involved, project setting and boundaries, purpose of the archaeological investigations, etc. Be certain to describe the project area and/or the area of potential effect (APE), including the project size in acres and hectares. If the project area and the APE differ, this should be made explicit in the report. List the staff and dates of investigation. Provide a detail of a 7.5’ USGS topographic quadrangle map showing the location of the area being investigated with a state inset map showing the location of the project within the state of Louisiana. All maps should include a scale, north arrow, and legend. Briefly summarize the results of the archaeology and the investigator's recommendations for further work. Wherever applicable, provide a legal description of the project area that includes Township, Range, and Section. It is not necessary to summarize the results of the project in the introduction.
  • Results - Overviews of the project area’s natural setting, cultural history, preliminary analyses of artifacts and/or features, and interpretations may be abbreviated in management summaries. Management summaries must include brief descriptions of the research design, field methods, and preliminary results. The management summary must contain a National Register determination of eligibility statement for each site investigated and sufficient information for the reviewer to assess the eligibility statement and recommendations. All sites described in a management summary must have site numbers assigned by the Division. All maps and figures required for reports are also required for management summaries, although draft quality (e.g., copies of field drawing and/or photographs) versions are acceptable. Maps and other figures in a management summary may be either integrated into the body of the summary or presented together as an appendix. All maps must have a scale, north arrow and legend.
  • Curation - Include a statement that designates which federally or state approved curation facility will be curating any recovered artifacts, field notes, and other relevant materials. Please see our Curation Standards for more information.
  • Conclusions and Recommendations- Management summaries should repeat the National Register eligibility assessment and recommendations for each site investigated. It must include a statement indicating when the draft version of a report for a project will be submitted.

References and Citations - References in the texts of management summaries submitted to the Division should use the Style Guide for the Society of American Archaeology (SAA).
A list of references cited should generally follow the summary of the management summary. The format for these citations should also follow the SAA format. The citations of other CRM reports, whether for projects in Louisiana or other states, should also follow SAA format, but also include information about the agency or company for whom the project was done, the name of the cultural resource company or individual that conducted the investigation, and the Division report number if possible.
