I founded BeauSoleil in 1975 for the primary purpose of reviving, teaching, creating, inviting master musicians to a larger American/World recognition of our unique Louisiana French Acadian Music, Language and Traditions. Beginning in 1975, I have received several NEA and Smithsonian grants to document the musical fiddle styles of southwest Louisiana and to bring musicians and their stories to La public schools. Through a NEA Franco-phone Study grant, I created a course on "La French Music, Opera to Zydeco" and taught at ULL from 1980-86. Since that time, we have toured full time. Weve played performing arts establishments, festivals, private functions in all 50 states more than three times each. Weve performed for two presidential inaugarations, national radio shows, ie A Prairie Home Companion, TV shows ie Conan Late Night, and in 33 countries. Weve received 2 Grammy awards and 12 nominations. Personally, Ive received the National Heritage Award, an Honorary Phd in Liberal Arts from ULL, Master Folk Master from Louisiana etc. I enjoy giving talks, teachings and examples of Louisiana Acadian History and Music and have performed solo, in a quartet or symphony.

Anchored in the musical vocabulary created by early Creole clarinetists such as Sidney Bechet, Omer Simeon, and Barney Bigard, Evan Christopher has created a highly personal brand of "contemporary early-jazz" that strives to extend the legacy of this unique clarinet style. Charismatic and versatile, Christopher was drawn to New Orleans from his native California in 1994 by the rich musical landscape in the birthplace of Jazz. His highly personal style and intimate approach prompted The New York Times to coin it as close-encounter music. Critics especially note his respect for the New Orleans tradition, calling his music: a triumph, joining the present seamlessly to a glorious past. Besides touring across the U.S., Europe, and Japan with his own groups, Christopher enjoys a prominent career as a featured soloist with groups such as the Grammy-Award-winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. His numerous recordings include his own Clarinet Road series and projects alongside jazz legends such as Dick Hyman and Bucky Pizzarelli. The second recording by his group, Django a la Creole, Finesse, was the #1 Jazz CD of 2010 in The Times UK.

If you swing down to New Orleans you won´t wanna miss Lilli Lewis - a modern-day, musical Renaissance woman - whose refined blend of jazz, blues, folk, classical, and soul bears the power to stir even the stiffest listener. On any given night, this progressive, provocative, and conscientious songwriter can be found looping vocals as a one woman Sweet Honey in the Rock, leaning into ivory keys like Nina Simone, or fronting her own original roots rock and soul band, The Shiz. Opéra Louisiane was founded in March of 2007 with a few simple goals in mind: to produce opera performances of the highest level in Louisiana´s capital city, to offer a Young People´s opera free to school children every year, to utilize the great musical and artistic talent of Louisiana singers and musicians, and to take a leadership role in nurturing young talent through our Young Artist´s Program. Shortly after its inception, Opéra Louisiane and LPB produced the Opéra Louisiane Gala concert featuring international opera stars at the Baton Rouge River Center. In the fall of 2008 Opéra Louisiane, through a generous grant from Mayor Kip Holden and the City Parish of East Baton Rouge and other significant sponsors including the Pennington Foundation, The Arts Council of Baton Rouge and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, produced its first Young People´s Opera, Mozart´s The Magic Flute. These productions remain successful, allowing over 20,000 Baton Rouge area 4th, 5th and 6th graders to see a fully staged opera over the past seven years. Opéra Louisiane, through its Young People´s Opera Program and outreach events, endeavors to help fulfill the need for music programs in schools that have been cut due to budget constraints.

Sarah Gromko is a singer, composer, and bandleader whose live work includes originals that stretch the definitions of the jazz idiom with rhythmically challenging, original arrangements. Compared with Sarah Vaughan, Patsy Cline, K.D. Lang, and Annie Ross by professional musicians and critics alike, Sarah Gromko´s vocals "show a deep sense of artistic maturity." Her debut recording as a bandleader was nationally recognized as "intimate," "eclectic," and "undeniably killer." In New York City, Gromko´s jazz quartet held residencies at New York City´s Puppets Jazz Bar, Kavehaz/Mannahatta, and Blue Water Grill. In New Orleans, she currently has a residency at Pearl Wine Co. Born into a gospel-singing family in the wind-swept prairies of Wyoming in 1950, Spencer Bohren began singing and playing music as youngster. At fourteen, inspired by the folk music he heard on the radio, Spencer picked up a guitar and within a few weeks started performing in public. He immediately delved deeply into Americas treasure of blues, country, gospel and folk music, soaking up guitar styles and historical details. In the 1960s and 1970s, Spencer played with rock, country and blues bands throughout the western US. By the mid-1970s, Spencer and his wife, Marilyn, found a spiritual home in the city of New Orleans, and started their family there. In 1997, Spencer developed Down the Dirt Road Blues, his award-winning history of American music, which has he has presented to 30,000 students of all ages, as well as concert audiences in America and Europe. His educational offerings have grown to include visual art, guitar workshops, and talks on songs of protest and music business, inspiring countless budding musicians.

Hailing from the bayous of Acadiana, this all female trio performs original Louisiana roots, Americana, country, rock, and folk music with a Cajun flair. They´ve been singing together since they were children. Maegan and Laura, daughters of the late Grammy nominated musican Al Berard, are sisters and Callie is their first cousin. Their passion and love for each other and music are the driving force in this trio. The name of their hometown and the patron Saint of Music, St. Cecilia helped to form the name of the band. As a trio, Sweet Cecilia has performed at various venues across South Louisiana. They have also performed at Festival International, Festival Acadiens et Creole, Crawfish Festival, and New Orleans Jazz Festival. Their dynamic family harmonies are evident at every performance. Sweet Cecilia released their self titled debut album in February 2015 featuring twelve original songs. It was recorded by Grammy Winner Joel Savoy. Sweet Cecilia is also featured on the Grammy nominated album “Light the Stars” by Bonsoir, Catin. They have also recorded with other groups such as Grammy nominated Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys and rock-n-roll country group Doublewide.

The Hoochie Digs, of Louisiana, began writing and playing music in 2014. The group is made up of Joey Wilson on guitar, mandolin, and cigar box, and Cher Couvillion, with vocals & light percussion. Our music has a way of telling life’s story “like it is”, but in a melodic way that makes the bitter sound sweet. A mélange of folk, soul, and slow rock flavor the tunes of the Digs.

Joey has been playing guitar since he was just a lad. When he is not plucking wires as a lineman, he’s strumming a 6 string. He performs in numerous local bands/groups. His guitar work has been recorded on albums of a variety of bands, & Joey has accompanied many notable musicians in live music performances.

Cher Couvillion is a singer/songwriter, who studied art and French in college. When Cher met Joey, just four years back, he drew out the music from her creative spirit, something different for her from drawings and poems. Cher loves to pair her lyrics with the music Joey writes. She is of Cajun descent, & some songs are written in French. She teaches, and had her singing start in choirs, dating back to Catholic School days. The Hoochie Digs love playing music locally in pubs, cafes, and at festivals. The Digs have a wealth of songs, and both writing and performing are ongoing.

Our recent one hour PBS Special is available on our Youtube Channel. The Louis Armstrong Society is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of New Orleans jazz and to honoring the most notable and influential individual of the genre: Louis Armstrong, aka Satchmo. Founded in 2001 during the Louis Armstrong Centennial Celebration, the Louis Armstrong Society celebrates great music and New Orleans´ heritage of jazz music through live performances across the country. The New Orleans based performers include some of the most respected musicians in the Big Easy, and all know the importance of ´blowing that horn´! In the spring of 2004, a decision was made to proceed with the opening of a jazz club called “Satchmo’s Place” in the New Orleans’ French Quarter. The time seemed right. The world was adjusting to a “new normal” and it was time to start again, to carve out another special corner in the French Quarter dedicated solely to New Orleans jazz. “Satchmo’s Place” opened in September of 2004 with the band performing two shows a night, five nights a week. In August of 2005, the society reviewed the operation and declared it a success. People were lined up to purchase tickets and the grass roots support was beginning to swell. We announced, “Come see us right after Labor Day!” Hurricane Katrina hit August 29, 2005 and once again the society faced a world-changing event.

>Born in Louisiana’s ‘Bayou Country’ just a few miles southwest of New Orleans, Houma native Waylon Thibodeaux has been dubbed “Louisiana’s Rockin Fiddler”. Today, this talented, self-taught Cajun musician has gained a notable reputation as one of Louisiana’s best known recording artists. His talents have led him to play festivals, clubs and other special events throughout the United States, Canada, France, Central and South America. His rollicking, crowd-pleasing performance on stage is exactly what one would expect from someone who, at age 16, was Louisiana’s state fiddle champion. He never fails to serve up a good helping of spicy, high-energy Louisiana and Cajun/Zydeco music. His unique musical style is best described by Thibodeaux himself: “It’s a mixture –it’s Cajun, but not too traditional, it’s Zydeco with a pinch of New Orleans’ sound, a small pinch of South Louisiana “Swamp Pop”, a taste of Country and a little Rock n’ Roll that’s sure to get you on your feet and dancing.”

Ultimate reality exists on scales infinitely smaller and infinitely larger than the reality we currently experience. Perceptive errors, however, prevent us from naturally regarding scales of reality beyond our own. Cognitive reality in the mind is based on experience. And it is through experience that we expand our frame of reference. Experiencing the crystalline world through a scanning electron microscope inspired my work. It provoked me to consider and deconstruct the idea of multiple scales of reality existing simultaneously with our own.

My work has evolved into a multiplicity of visions, directions, and intuitive gestures. The paintings, installations, and sculptures I create are a product of recalled images of cumulative life experiences. Various forms of music, as well as the rhythm of people, and places assist in the creating and molding of the character of my work. I see my art and music as extensions of each other. I often use music as a model by incorporating its structure, rhythms, and dynamics elements into each piece; emerging into a new realm of experience. Objects are also a very important part of the creation and aesthetic of my art. Found objects are a continuum of a narrative flowing through the work, becoming elements of a story intricately woven into a work of art, in order to create a new meaning and new context, in an attempt to display in the layers the images interrelationship of cosmic forces and every-day. This search for universality continues to drive and inform my work. Aesthetics of the work involves many complex color combinations and rhythmic patterns inspired by geometric patterns found in nature. Rhythms and harmonies converge into a symphony of colors that work together to create a powerful visual experience. It is my vision to create pieces that bring a since of intrigue, color and excitement while addressing the physiological and historical concerns of people.

An 80 yr old sepia tone photograph is compelling. And memorable. This is especially so if you are Southern. My works are simple, straightforward drawing. Rendering is my skill, the foundation on which all this imagery is generated. I feel a certain noblesse oblige´ to the subject. Artisanship is a priority. I am a storyteller in two dimensions. These drawings are from our combined memories. My goal is to share with those who remember and instruct those too young to know of the value of this imagery.

The characteristics of Japanese art-line, flat color, pattern and asymmetrical balance-are elements that inspire me and complement my work. In 1998 I travelled to Japan as a recipient of a Fulbright Memorial Fellowship. I was an assistant professor at Baton Rouge Community College for ten years where I taught Asian and Nonwestern Art. My art is a blend of spontaneity and calculation eventually become organic creations---continually flowing and evolving in new and unexpected directions. My subjects are my own personal expression on current events, family relationships, reflections on nature and personal beliefs. Often an object is indicated (such as abstracted torsos, a leaf or a foot). Furthermore, personal symbols are also included within some paintings that represent ideas that have no words.I was born in California and attended the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston, UCLA and received a Bachelor of Arts in Art and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of California, Berkeley. In 2003 I was awarded a visual artist fellowship from the Louisiana Division of the Arts. Since then I have participated in several residencies. My work is included in public and private collections as well as being pictured and reviewed in local and out of state publications.

Art has long been integral in my life. As a young child I experienced two formative events: a visit to a fine arts museum, where I was fascinated by classical and African sculpture and abstract painting as well as the influence of an elderly relative who encouraged me to paint what I saw around me. Also influential in my life is the fact that I grew up in the countryside on the banks of the Mississippi River and my lifelong spiritual connection with that mystical, powerful body of water continues. After my interest in art was awakened , the works of such artists as Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg and Paul Klee have provided me visual stimulation and intellectual inspiration, whether I was painting landscapes or making abstract constructions. Making art is a necessity for me. The acts of drawing, painting, painting and sculpting provide me with the means to express my rich interior life, to share my thoughts and fellings with others.

The artwork of Anastasia Pelias reflects a seriousness and dedication to traditional art practice that is strikingly relevant in the context of today´s postmodern art culture. An abstractionist in the truest form, Pelias´ work arises from a passion for painting, both the concept and the actuality - for the literalness of painting. Her canvases, explorations in brilliant color and visual relationships, are refreshingly free of irony and splendidly full of painterly forthrightness. Pelias was born in New Orleans, LA to Greek parents. Her artistic practice is rooted in the dual cultural identity of both her native and ancestral roots in New Orleans, LA and Skopelos, Greece. Blending the vibrant, compassionate nature of a New Orleanian with her weighty Greek heritage, Pelias´ work is rich with personal depth of emotion, life experience and the spirit of exploration. Pelias received her BFA from the Newcomb College of Tulane University in 1981 and her MFA from the University of New Orleans in 1996. Her career spans thirty years and multiple reinventions. Anastasia Pelias is represented in New Orleans by Octavia Art Gallery and in Houston by Zoya Tommy Contemporary. She has exhibited nationally and has works included in private and public collections, including the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Mobile Museum of Art. Pelias had two solo exhibitions in 2013, in Houston and New Orleans. The exhibit, Ritual Devotion, at Octavia Art Gallery in New Orleans was accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by New York-based art critic and independent curator Lilly Wei.

My work is an embodiment of being lost. Growing up as an Army brat, I found myself constantly calling new places home, and spent countless hours wandering aimlessly in strange places. This act has carried forward into my art process, where every painting becomes a new place to discover, and the destination is as unknown as the route taken to get there. Sometimes these journeys are based on specific ideas that needs to be explored, or photographs of places visited that suggest possibilities that only the process of painting offers.

George Marks is a contradiction. His work is simultaneously ordered and spontaneous. Carelessness and rigid geometry mingle on the canvas. Passages of drawing in the work range from sensitively rendered figuration to loose impetuous scrawls. His palette is generally warm and harmonious, but searing thin stripes of color may awaken the calm. All of his pieces are deliberately orchestrated to fit together into a continuous installation, and yet each is also an improvisation. The truly radical thing about Marks´ work is his process. Although, he simply labels his work with the obfuscating little phrase ´´mixed media on canvas´´, he has developed a vocabulary of materials and techniques that are unduplicated. This rich and complex combination of materials may of course be appreciated in its own right, but for Marks this is not the point. Rather, the medium is inextricably webbed to the message. Nothing is done for a strictly decorative purpose. His work brings forth far ranging art historical associations such as Edgar Degas to Barnett Newman, Richard Diebenkorn, and Donald Judd. What sets Marks´ work apart from many other modern painters, however, are his roots to the landscape and culture of South Louisiana . His work is never void of content, no matter how abstract the few simple notations become. His work recalls the flat broad vistas of that which each of us unconsciously knows by heart.

Taking a holistic approach to subject matter, I find importance in not only the primary object, but how it is synchronized with space surrounding it. Color and light are balanced between actuality and intuition. The colors of an object influence choice of hue, taking what I need and then making a subjective interpretation. Finding an extreme importance in creating art which compels the viewer to visualize beyond the boarders, I compose a vignette with a sense of a broader environment. A harmony of positive and negative space allows the composition to unfold.

Smith has always felt fortunate to grow up amidst the richness of Cajun culture and the lush landscape of South Louisiana. Her appreciation for nature and diversity are strong elements of her work. Lisa di Stefano´s work employs subtle details, respectful suggestions, and rousing palettes. A Baton Rouge native, she often chooses the Louisiana landscape as the subject of her paintings; enlivening trees, water, and marsh grasses with a diversity of hues and thin, multi-layered brushstrokes. While her most recent work is an abstract interpretation of the landscape in motion, her past pieces have been compared to those of esteemed Louisiana artists George Dureau (1930-) and Alexander John Drysdale (1870-1934). Having learned and painted in the land of representation, Lisa now communicates to us from a more personal perspective. A native of Baton Rouge, di Stefano´s works are characterized by their extraordinary palette and whimsical composition. Her artwork has found a home in many private, public, and corporate collections. She has been a featured artist in selected exhibitions in Chicago, Dallas, New York, and Louisiana. In recent years, diStefano´s paintings have appeared in Southern Accents, Veranda, and other magazines and newspapers. With a glow of transparent watercolor washes, Sue shares the beauty in her surroundings. In creating pleasing designs of shapes, color and texture, she hopes to draw the viewer into her painting and evoke a sense of peace, good feeling and refreshment. Knowing since childhood that she had a gift in art, Sue did not fully embrace it until mid life. As a young adult, Sue began painting in watercolor for fun, learning the techniques of watercolor from a local artist. It was only in the past 14 years, though, that she took a more serious approach to art and began an intense self study of design principles and their application to her artwork. Sue has been exhibiting her work professionally since 1999. Her artwork hangs in many public and private art collections in the US and has been accepted into several juried shows in Texas and Louisiana, many times receiving awards. In 2011, she was the recipient of the Lake Charles Mayor´s Art Award for Artist of the Year. Born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Sue is a graduate of McNeese State University in Lake Charles. My Louisiana Love (2012) is a personal documentary narrative about Verdin’s life, exposing a centuries old story of loss and resilience in the Mississippi River Delta. Her photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is included in Unfathomable City : A New Orleans Atlas, University of California (2013) and The Good Pirates of the Forgotten Bayous, Yale University Press (2008.) “As a sculptor, I am constantly striving for that balance between great intensity and delicate sensitivity in my work. When I sculpt, there is an unbelievable force that leads me towards yet another discovery. To capture what I see both on the outside and inside of my subjects is my driving force, my grandest challenge. Each sculpture is a new beginning, a journey to unearth the essence of each subject. It is in this simplicity that I am inspired to reveal the secrets within each portrait and figure. Finally, I wish to hold true the meaning of the term Fine Art, and to pursue the thought that my work must continue to reach toward its worthiness of that definition.” Bernadas has been elected to the prestigious Portrait Sculptors Society of the Americas, WAOW, Portrait Society of America, and represented in local and national galleries, as well as public art works throughout the region.

Humor plays an important role in my work. I often use it as a device to bring attention to more critical issues. Issues that remain constant in my work are an exploration of mental and physical health, themes of healing, comfort and self-preservation. I use materials and processes that personally speak to my conceptual concerns and often allude to various emotional states, all of which are meant to serve as an invitation to lure the viewer into their own state of self-awareness. My work often addresses psychological themes while exploring the relationship between humor and personal therapies.

Jeff Louviere is from New Orleans, Vanessa Brown is from New York and they met each other half-way, in Savannah. Jeff graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design during which he and 3 other artists created the worlds largest painting, a 76,000 square foot image of Elvis which was included in the Guinness Book of World Records. Vanessa began photographing at age 12 and won a Kodak International Award of Excellence in Photography when she was 17. She photographed through Italy and Greece before graduating from Rochester Institute of Technology with a degree in Photography. Louviere + Vanessas tableaux vivant series, Slumberland, began in 2003 and continues still. It is a collection of separate narratives existing as dialogue between the couple. In 2005, they started on their Creature series, a singular story told through many faces and as such the opposite of the Slumberland series. They have a long fascination with themes of duality, and paradox: beauty as horror, creation as destruction, the personal as a universal. Craft and concept are the devices they use to explore the gray zone within those themes.

Michelle Fontenot is a full time artist working mainly in glass, either doing mosaics or leaded panels. Trained in ceramics at University of Louisiana at Lafayette, art has been a constant in her life since childhood. Running her own business; M. Fontenot Glassworks, along with doing many local festivals, Michelle travels throughout the southern United States doing art shows. Anytime during the year you can find her work at galleries in Lafayette, Arnaudville, and New Orleans. Her artwork has expanded in recent years to include recycled found art sculptures, the original functional glass mosaic “Not So Lazy Susans”, and she has designed many local festival posters. In 2011 Michelle and two other artists were chosen to collaborate on the artwork for Festivals International de´ Louisiane. In 2013 traveling to Redon, France to work side by side with other artists from the “Semaine Francaise” project was a dream come true. Ann was born in Ville Platte, Louisiana to Hurley and Shirley Vidrine on March 13, 1961. When Ann turned eight her mother, acting on a hunch, gave her a guitar. Within months Ann was playing in her uncle Eloi Vidrine´s Cajun fiddle band. Ann´s grandfather, Leon "La Pip" Vidrine, was also a self-taught Cajun fiddler. In 1983, Ann graduated with a Marketing degree from LSU. In 1989 she launched her performing and lecturing career. She was awarded the Folklife Fellowship Award from the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism to study with master Cajun Fiddler, Oran "Doc" Guidry. In 1990, she released her first recordings, Ann Vidrine Cajun Classics, and was nominated for Best Female Vocalist in the Cajun French Music Awards in Lafayette. She has presented her entertaining and educational cultural program called The Cajun Experience since 1983. In 1995, this unique cultural heritage program evolved into her internationally recognized Cajun Fiddler Walking Tour for passengers from the riverboats docking in historic downtown Baton Rouge. Tourists, visitors and students are Ann´s favorite audiences because they enjoy being engaged, interacting, and experiencing "joie de´ vive" for themselves. Ann´s tours, school presentations, and special events performances are jam-packed with lots of Cajun fiddling and "hands-on" activities such as old-time Cajun fiddle bow construction.
