Owen Murphy, a native of Louisiana, was born in New Orleans. After attending the Univ. of New Orleans, he moved to New York City in the late 60´s, briefly returning to New Orleans in the early 70´s. It was during this time that he learned the basics in photography and helped create the New Orleans Visual Collective, a communal learning experience under the guidance of the late Dennis Cipnic. He then moved to San Francisco to continue his travels and further develop his interest in photography. By 1975, he returned to New Orleans and helped create the Photo Exchange, a photographers´ run exhibition and work space. For many years, I had photographed landscapes using a medium format camera. I made the change to digital for digital was having such a huge impact on the photography market, the film and papers I used were no longer produced. Once I grasped the power of digital, it opened a new world to explore, this taken me into the surreal.

Monique Verdin is a native daughter of southeast Louisiana. Her documentation offers an intimate window into Louisiana’s indigenous Houma Nation, exposing the complex interconnectedness of environment, economics, culture, climate and change challenging the bayou communities of her homeland. My Louisiana Love (2012) is a personal documentary narrative about Verdin’s life, exposing a centuries old story of loss and resilience in the Mississippi River Delta. Her photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is included in Unfathomable City : A New Orleans Atlas, University of California (2013) and The Good Pirates of the Forgotten Bayous, Yale University Press (2008.) In 2013, she collaborated with Artspot Productions and Mondo Bizarro on a mile and a half long performance/procession/eco-experience concerning the loss of land and culture in Southeast Louisiana titled Cry You One. Verdin is project manager of a new community-built project called the Land Memory Bank & Seed Exchange. The Exchange intends to create a community-built record of the unique land, cultures and ecology present at the base of the Mississippi River Delta.

Where some people see destruction and devastation, I find beauty. Whether it´s man man-made neglect or an act of nature, everything is stunning in it´s own way. View your surroundings with more than just your eyes... look at things with your soul. That´s the aspect I try to capture with my photographs.
