In my current work, graphic industrial elements are contrasted with weathered, organic imagery. Familiar icons and symbols are supersized, thus shifting their meaning. There is a celebration in the joy of labor and figuring things out in terms of craft and engineering. It is my hope that this work resonates with the viewer, inspiring hope and reflection. Ben Diller received his Master of Fine Arts in 2002 in Studio Art, concentrating on sculptural installation, from the University of California, Davis. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1992, majoring in Painting, double minor in Sculpture and Printmaking from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

I am a professor of Art at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana where I teach design, photography and art metal crafts. I hold a BS in Art Education, and an MS in Instructional Design from the University of Wisconsin and an MFA in Graphic Design from Louisiana Tech. As an artist I work primarily in wood, embellished with metals, ceramics and oil painting. My thematic constants are spirituality, nature and the eternal. My interest in woodworking and metal began at the University of Wisconsin under the tutelage of Skip Johnson and Fred Fenster. I have studied wood-carving in, Austria and native Alaskan carving in Ketchikan. I design built furniture, carved an extravagant baby crib and created two full size carousel animals, a skill I learned from Bud Ellis in Chattanooga. I have also built 10 acoustic guitars using unusual woods such as 50,000 year old ancient kauri. I exhibit widely and was awarded a Louisiana Artists Endowment in 2000. I am represented by Carol Robinson Gallery in New Orleans.

My steel sculptures remind me of places and events in the Southwest. Detail is minimized so that the viewer’s own experiences, memories and imagination become part of the experience. The sculptures undoubtedly evoke different, but perhaps similar, memories than mine for others.

“As a sculptor, I am constantly striving for that balance between great intensity and delicate sensitivity in my work. When I sculpt, there is an unbelievable force that leads me towards yet another discovery. To capture what I see both on the outside and inside of my subjects is my driving force, my grandest challenge. Each sculpture is a new beginning, a journey to unearth the essence of each subject. It is in this simplicity that I am inspired to reveal the secrets within each portrait and figure. Finally, I wish to hold true the meaning of the term Fine Art, and to pursue the thought that my work must continue to reach toward its worthiness of that definition.” Bernadas has been elected to the prestigious Portrait Sculptors Society of the Americas, WAOW, Portrait Society of America, and represented in local and national galleries, as well as public art works throughout the region.

Humor plays an important role in my work. I often use it as a device to bring attention to more critical issues. Issues that remain constant in my work are an exploration of mental and physical health, themes of healing, comfort and self-preservation. I use materials and processes that personally speak to my conceptual concerns and often allude to various emotional states, all of which are meant to serve as an invitation to lure the viewer into their own state of self-awareness. My work often addresses psychological themes while exploring the relationship between humor and personal therapies.
