I strongly disagree with the RSD's proposal to demolish the Thomy Lafon School. The school building had an inspired and environmentally-friendly design from Day 1, but chronic neglect has turned the building into an eyesore. Do not mistake the community's outrage at this neglect for a genuine desire to see the building destroyed forever. If New Orleans plans to rebuild in a manner that restores economic vitality to the city, then scarce funding should not be wasted tearing down buildings that can be adapted to new uses at a lower cost than demolition and replacement. |
