Comments: I urge you to preserve the Wheatley School as a significant building from the late modern work of architect Charles Colbert, one of New Orleans most important modern architects and educator (Both at Tulane and as Dean at Columbia University)

The building was not damaged in the flooding but instead has suffered institutional neglect.

Rather than replacing it, I propose that the New Orleans School District sponsor an open competition for ideas to upgrade the building as a sustainable place of learning in the Treme district, a place that urgently needs new ideas about a sustainable future.

The competition will be 'inundated' with strong ideas for re-use, renewal, retrofitting and adding to the building.

Preserving the frayed past in New Orleans including the recent past will pay dividends in history, educational place-making and new ways of dealing with challenging issues of loss of place. Use and build on the past, do not start with a scorched earth policy. There is already enough empty land and vanished history in New Orleans.

Thank you and I look forward to a sustainable decision.
