Comments: The fact remains that the immediate neighborhood has the best chance to rebound with success if SFC church remains AND Holy Cross becomes its new neighbor. Why must FEMA's decision be framed as an either/or proposition? FEMA has been unfairly put in a lose/lose situation by the Archdiocese and by Holy Cross. First, they colluded in an attempt to fly under the radar by racing to tear down the church before any serious opposition could be formed. On this count they failed completely. The Friends of St. Frances Cabrini Church did Holy Cross, in retrospect, a monumental favor by putting the brakes on their timetable. Otherwise, Holy Cross would probably have lost the $20 million they are after from FEMA. Why, because a lawsuit would have been filed, thereby tying up the release of the mitigation funds indefinitely, not unlike what is going to happen in the battle with HUD over the future of the public housing projects. Obstructionists? No way. SAVE CABRINI. Use the $700,000 in demo costs plus the stolen $4.2 million in flood insurance proceeds to do the right thing.
