St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Church, Paris Ave. N.O., LA
Comments: Having been a resident of Cabrini Parish (Chamberlain Dr. and Prentiss Ave. one block from the church) for many years and a Holy Cross High School graduate I find FEMA's intervention into the demolition of the church just another government agency intrusion. Granted a certain few want the church preserved for architectural reasons. I find it amusing that the original Cabrini church a circa WWII designed metal skinned quonset hut did not draw the same attention when the new modern church was being built in the 60's. The structure served its purpose as did the quonset hut. It was a place for people to congregate and worship. Hurricane Katrina and the Archdiose's decision not to reopen the church was the death knoll for the structure and the church parish. Holy Cross suffered a similar loss the school like the church was devastated, the difference being the school (the students and teachers) are a viable entity. Demolishing the church will allow HC to bring much needed education to a more accessible part of the city. Additionally, the school will indirectly aid in the revitalization of a community whose residents were growing increasing older. Perhaps now there will be an infusion of youth that will help re-establish that wonderful area called Lake Terrace.
