Creative Aging

The Louisiana Division of the Arts (LDOA) is dedicated to expanding access to the arts in all communities throughout our state. One way we achieve this is through Creative Aging initiatives, which are carefully designed, sequential arts learning experiences for adults ages 55+. LDOA has supported workshops, symposiums, and classes for older adults since 2017.

Thank you to our programming partners, Arts Council of Greater Baton RougeAcadiana Center for the ArtsArts Council of Central LouisianaShreveport Regional Arts Council, and St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs for their efforts in providing Creative Aging programs in Spring 2023.

Veterans Songwriting Workshops

Since 2019, the Louisiana Division of the Arts (LDOA) has supported the work of Songs of Survivors. Headed by singer-songwriter David St. Romain, this organization collaborates with social workers to help individuals cope with trauma through music composition. Between June 2022 and June 2023, Songs of Survivors conducted seven workshops with veterans in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Covington, New Orleans, Opelousas, and Shreveport, teaching basic concepts of rhythm, pitch, composition, and lyric writing. These workshops resulted in seven unique songs co-written by combat veterans and performed by David St. Romain. Click below to listen to one of the original songs.
